Once a small, simple hobby done with friends in backyards, mud bogging in Florida has become an American pastime that boasts events and draws crowds numbered in the tens of thousands. Mud bogging, also known as mudding, has existed as a hobby since the mid-to-late 1950’s, coinciding with major upgrades in the mechanics of pickup trucks post-WWII that made the vehicles faster, more powerful, and easier to handle. During the late 70’s and early 80’s, it became popular within the mud bogging hobby to add tractor tires to pickup trucks, making the activity much more exciting for both drivers and spectators. Mud bogging vehicles must be four-wheel-drive in order to handle the rough terrain, and typically trucks with higher suspensions and larger tires fare better than those that do not have these upgrades.

Organized Events for Mudding in Florida

At organized mud bogging events, trucks are generally organized based on the size of the vehicle. The most popular type of competitive mud bogging involves trucks competing on a time scale through a mud track or pit. The truck that makes it the furthest by the end of the allotted time is declared the winner. If more than one of the trucks manages to travel the entire length of the track before time runs out, then the truck that made it through the course fastest wins.
